Alisher Usmanov is very rich and operates in Russia. He is one of those men who got very rich, very fast when the Soviet government fell. He is still operating in Russia unlike various crooks who are in prison or on the run. This means that he gets on with Vladimir Putin unlike Berezovsky and Khodorkovsky. It does not mean that he is not a criminal too. NB He only got six years. He got a pardon too. This is just as significant as his conviction. It means he has influence and power or, just maybe that he was innocent. Craig Murray is not swallowing that idea.
The Forbes write up tells us that he is in steel and an unscrupulous manipulator. This is a low key report from an unrepentant capitalist. Craig Murray was Her Majesty's Ambassador to Uzbekistan. His view is rather more pungent [ Vicious Thug, Criminal, Racketeer, Heroin Trafficker and Accused Rapist ]. Even The Times is less than flattering. Read for yourself. Think for yourself. Decide for yourself but ask why he has to hire lawyers to stop people calling him a big time crook. He is named as a Jew at Jews who rob Russia which might or might not be right.
Craig Murray - Opposition leader tortured with drugs

This deal was negotiated between Gulnara Karimova and Alisher Usmanov, ... Some sort of Alisher Usmanov/Gulnara Karimova alliance is Karimov’s first choice ...
UNQUOTE
Usmanov colludes with Karimov. Opponents get put in prison, tortured et cetera. It all sounds fairly normal with a bandit state. I doubt that Mr Murray will be going there again having told the truth.

Alisher Usmanov, Arsenal's new oligarch
QUOTE
Alisher Usmanov has a reputation as a hard man of business even among Russia’s oligarchs and once acknowledged that shares were his favourite possession.Rated Russia’s 18th richest man and worth an estimated $5.5 billion, the metals and mining mogul has shown no previous interest in football. His only prominent involvement in sport until now has been as president of the Russian and European fencing associations. But Mr Usmanov has been building up a media empire in Russia, with Kremlin approval, and may see a stake in Arsenal as a way to boost audiences by screening matches to football-crazy fans.
UNQUOTE
Got rich in steel, moving into the media and the football industry. A lot of new money is going to sport. For love? I seriously doubt it.
Alisher Usmanov from ukwatch.net
QUOTE
Alisher Usmanov, potential Arsenal chairman, is a Vicious Thug, Criminal, Racketeer, Heroin Trafficker and Accused Rapist.I thought I should make my views on Alisher Usmanov quite plain to you. You are unlikely to see much plain talking on Usmanov elsewhere in the media because he has already used his billions and his lawyers in a pre-emptive strike. They have written to all major UK newspapers, including the latter:
“Mr Usmanov was imprisoned for various offences under the old Soviet regime. We wish to make it clear our client did not commit any of the offences with which he was charged. He was fully pardoned after President Mikhail Gorbachev took office. All references to these matters have now been expunged from police records . . . Mr Usmanov does not have any criminal record.”
Let me make it quite clear that Alisher Usmanov is a criminal. He was in no sense a political prisoner, but a gangster and racketeer who rightly did six years in jail. The lawyers cunningly evoke "Gorbachev", a name respected in the West, to make us think that justice prevailed. That is completely untrue.

Mr Murray tells it like it is again.

Secondly, you may note some blurring on that second screen grab; this is necessary because Alisher Usmanov has unleashed his legal attack dogs.Craig's post about Usmanov's background has been removed pending legal advice, and if you've linked to the item or repeated it, you or your site host can probably expect a threatening letter.
I'm going to repeat a (partially censored) segment of Craig's article here, to provide some much-needed context for those who missed it:

And, as former ambassador to Uzbekistan, we can expect Craig to be reliably-informed when it comes to such matters.

Gazprom went on to buy up Russia’s two large independent national newspapers. The last significant remaining one, Kommersant, was bought personally last November by the sinister Uzbek oligarch Alisher Usmanov, chairman of Gazprominvest Holdings. The Editor-in-Chief was immediately sacked while the defence correspondent, Igor Safronov, mysteriously fell to his death from a window three months later.

Goonerboy - Craig Murray on Alisher Usmanov - not nice reading
QUOTE
Craig Murray...... talks about the growing reliance of the UK on Russian energy.... Putin signed an agreement with Turkmenistan to expand a pipeline and massively increase the transit of Central Asian gas through Russia.Key to this triumph has been Alisher Usmanov and his Gazprominvest Holdings. This subsidiary is the channel for massive slush funds. In November 2004, for example, a payment of £44million to Gulnara, the daughter of President Karimov of Uzbekistan, secured that country’s gas contracts for Gazprom from under the noses of the US.....
Usmanov has become close to former German Chancellor Schröder through the Nordstream project. Analysts believe this has sparked a determined drive by the Schroeder’s political allies to persuade the EU to remove sanctions against Uzbekistan. [ Money talks? - Editor ].... These sanctions were imposed following the Andijan massacre in which 700 pro-democracy demonstrators were killed by Karimov’s troops in May 2005.

Usmanov Is A Convicted Blackmailer Buying Into Facebook
QUOTE
People who flirt on Facebook – and why else join – may be less than enamoured by the fact that a $200 million stake has been bought by a company of which the biggest shareholder is a major criminal convicted of … blackmail.Gangster and racketeer Alisher Usmanov was jailed in the Soviet Union when he finally overreached himself and attempted to blackmail a Jewish KGB officer. [ Unconfirmed - Ed. ]
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/facebook-indirectly-obtains-a-colorful-backer [ Facebook indirectly obtains a colorful backer ] After the fall of the Soviet Union, Alisher Usmanov was pardoned by his croney President Karimov of Uzbekistan, perhaps the World’s most vicious dictator. Karimov runs a gangster state and political opponents have been boiled alive.
I was British Ambassador to Uzbekistan and I will swear to these facts on oath before any court.
Usmanov became a billionaire oligarch in the gangster takeover of Russia’s “privatised” mineral assets. He is close to Putin, and has been used by him to buy up and neutralise much of the little remaining independent media in Russia. Usmanov does this in his own name or as Chairman of GazpromInvestHolding. Independent journalists have died in mysterious accidents following Usmanov takeovers.
For a blackmailer who is a key tool in Putin’s increasingly authoritarian regime, to have a share in Facebook is totally unacceptable. Perhaps someone might start a Facebook group against it?
Usmanov uses lawyers to close down blogs who carry these facts. His lawyers, Schillings, will assert a number of lies in response:
Schillings Lie 1 Usmanov was a political prisoner
UNTRUE He was a gangster convicted of blackmail. There was no political element. (It has been hinted to me that anti-Semitism might have formed part of the motive, but without supporting evidence for that theory I think it was just greed).Schillings Lie 2 Usmanov received a full pardon from President Gorbachev
UNTRUE He was pardoned by President Karimov of Uzbekistan after the fall of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev greatly dislikes UsmanovSchillings Lie 3 He was convicted because he took the rap for a friend
UNTRUE Usmanov only started using this line when I revealed he was not a political prisoner but a racketeer. Nobody else ever mentioned such a theory to me.

Oligarchs
The oligarchs are the men who stole 85% of Russia's assets when the USSR fell. It is alleged that one was not a Jew. I have never found him. Usmanov keeps ugly company. These are some of them.
