450 KIDS IN FEAR AFTER SEX-PROBE MAN DIES OF AIDS
A Desperate search is under way for hundreds of former residents of children's homes after a live-in social worker being investigated for sex assaults died of AIDS.
Social services bosses in London and Liverpool urged ex-residents to contact them following disclosures that house parent Mark Trotter was the subject of three child sex inquiries before he died.
One local council confirmed that they had already secretly been in touch with 50 of the 450 problem kids who had been in contact with bachelor Trotter, from the time he joined them in 1981 until he retired through ill health in December, 1993.
In what officials at Hackney Council called "a sensitive operation", former residents of Trowbridge House home - which accommodated boys and girls aged up to 16 - were asked if they had any sexual experiences with Trotter and, if necessary, were advised to have medical checks.
The council is also to advertise in newspapers for more to come forward.
Similar checks are being made in Liverpool where loner Trotter worked at the New Hayes Home in Allerton Road as a resident house parent from 1980 to 1981. Many of the children there would now be adults in their late twenties or early thirties.
Trotter left Liverpool in 1981 for Hackney where he worked at Trowbridge House until it closed down in 1986.
He was switched to work as a field social worker with a responsibility for problem children and families.
Trotter was the subject of two complaints in Liverpool and one in Hackney.
Police and social workers
investigated at the time but no action was taken.
Then last year
Liverpool Police contacted Hackney to trace Trotter. It is understood
a man who had been in his care in 1980 had made a complaint.
A
Hackney spokesman said: "Last year the situation changed with
the receipt of clear evidence of alleged abuse from Liverpool. They
said they now had serious evidence."
But Trotter was too ill to be interviewed. He is thought to have died in last July. The spokesman said: "It is a very delicate situation and we want to ensure people who were in our care are okay."
Liverpool Social Services confirmed they had been in contact with Hackney and were exchanging information.
A spokesman said: "We can confirm that Mr Trotter worked as a house parent at one of our homes but I can't comment further."
One Hackney social services worker said: "Trotter was a solitary person, rather shy and sensitive.
"He lived alone in a flat in Hackney and he started showing signs of illness a couple of years before he left.
"He took more and more time off and was obviously seriously ill and had lost a lot of weight.
"We heard sometime afterwards that he was HIV and had contracted AIDS."
A GIRL of 15 was last night undergoing AIDS tests and counselling after being stabbed in the face with a blood-filled syringe. The teenager was attacked by a man who claimed he had the disease as she returned from a night-out with a school friend. He filled the syringe with blood from his arm and punctured her cheek after first chasing her friend. Police later appealed for witnesses to the assault in Hunter Square, Edinburgh.
