Hiroshima had the privilege of being
the first town ever to be hit with a nuclear bomb. Nagasaki was
second and caused the end of the Second World War. It also save the
lives of many thousand men. I knew two of them. There were no
complaints from them. Others object but as Americans say: Pearl
Harbour began it. Nagasaki ended it. More at Atomic

but then wars are not. The photos were taken a few days later which
is why some of the corpses are swollen. One question that does not seem to get
answered or even asked is whether there was a third bomb waiting to go if that
had been what it took.

Van Kirk was 24 when he joined the crew of the Enola Gay
and by then he had already flown more than 50 bombing raids over Europe
and North Africa. Most of those flights were in the company of his great
friends, Tibbets and Thomas Ferebee, the Enola Gay's bombardier. Together,
they formed the core of the Hiroshima mission. In the six months prior to the mission they and other
members of the
509th Composite Group had been holed up in Wendover Field, Utah,
training for an unspecified bombing run amid total secrecy. The words
"atomic" and "nuclear" were never mentioned...........

on 14 August. I don't know when it would have ended if we had not dropped

The Robert L. Capp
collection at the Hoover Institution Archives contains ten
never-before-published photographs illustrating the immediate
aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing. These photographs, taken by an
unknown Japanese photographer, were found in 1945 among rolls of
undeveloped film in a cave outside Hiroshima by U.S. serviceman
Robert L. Capp, who was attached to the occupation forces. Unlike
most photos of the Hiroshima bombing, these dramatically convey the
human as well as material destruction unleashed by the atomic bomb.
Mr. Capp donated them to the Hoover Archives in 1998 with the
provision that they not be reproduced until 2008. Three of these
photographs are reproduced in Atomic Tragedy with the permission of
the Capp family. The entire set is available below. Please contact
